Objective: Launch a pioneering initiative to document and build comprehensive datasets on the increased private vessel activities in Greenland’s territorial waters, particularly along East Greenland’s coast.
This project will focus on understanding the motivations and activities of these vessels, with a specific emphasis on identifying and mitigating potential illegal activities, including unauthorized mineral extraction.
Additionally, it will address the environmental risks posed by cruise ships, particularly the potential for oil spills that could harm Greenland’s fragile ecosystems.
Scope: The project aims to track where and why an increasing number of private vessels and cruise ships are entering Greenland’s waters. Data gathered will support the development of effective strategies for border control, ensuring security and environmental protection.
Outcome: The data and findings from this project will underscore the political and environmental necessity for stricter border control and surveillance measures. By identifying high-risk activities and areas, Arctic Watch Greenland aims to support policy-makers in implementing effective enforcement and protective actions to safeguard Greenland’s coast and environment.
Data Collection
Utilize satellite imagery, drone surveillance, local observations, and vessel tracking systems to gather detailed data on vessel locations, routes, and durations.
Border Control Recommendations
Advocate for enhanced border enforcement measures to monitor suspected illegal activities.
Data Analysis
Compile and analyze collected data to identify patterns, potential risks, and hotspots of increased activity.
Environmental Impact Assessment
Evaluate potential geological and ecological impacts due to increased vessel traffic and suspected illigal mineral extraction.
